How to spend a day at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Mornings at Animal Kingdom start early. If you’re planning to rope drop, this is when I would do it—especially if you’re visiting without Lightning Lanes and rides are a top priority for you. While I personally don’t usually rope drop this park (I often purchase Lightning Lanes so I can move at a more relaxed pace), rope dropping is absolutely worth it if you’re trying to maximize ride time. 🌿☕🎢

This is especially true if you’re staying at a Disney Resort Hotel and can take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry. Those extra minutes can make a huge difference.

If you are rope dropping, these are the attractions I recommend heading to first:

  • Avatar Flight of Passage – Still one of the most popular rides in all of Walt Disney World, and for good reason.
  • Na’vi River Journey – A beautiful, immersive ride that builds a long wait quickly.
  • Expedition Everest – A great early-morning option, especially if you want to ride more than once with minimal waits.

As for Kilimanjaro Safaris, I don’t think it has to be a rope-drop attraction, but timing definitely matters. Animal activity is heavily influenced by weather:

  • In summer, I recommend riding earlier in the day before the heat peaks.
  • In winter, mid-day is often ideal, when temperatures are warmer and animals are more active.

Planning this ride around the season can make a noticeable difference in your experience.

After that initial burst of rides, I like to slow things down with breakfast. My go-to is the pancake sandwich from Drinkwallah, located near Yak & Yeti Restaurant. I usually take it just behind Drinkwallah, where there’s plenty of seating that’s typically quiet and empty early in the morning—perfect for a peaceful start to the day.

Once I’ve eaten, I head over to Java Isle for a Vietnamese coffee, which is hands-down my favorite drink in the park. Fueled up and caffeinated, it’s time to jump back into ride mode or start exploring.

After a busy morning, Animal Kingdom really shines as a park to slow down and take it all in. This is actually my favorite way to spend time here. There is so much to do beyond rides, and the atmosphere is unmatched.

I love wandering the walking trails for extra animal encounters, especially the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, Tree of Life Garden, and the Discovery Island Trails. You’ll see animals and lush foliage along the way, but what really stands out is how peaceful these areas feel. They’re the perfect escape from the busier parts of the park.

Another great way to spend non-ride time is by catching a show. My absolute favorite—and a total must-do for me—is Feathered Friends in Flight. From owls to eagles, you’ll see an incredible variety of birds performing impressive flighted stunts with their trainers, all while learning fun and interesting facts along the way.

A newer, lighter option that’s still really cute is Zootopia: Better Zoogether!—an easy, fun watch if you’re looking to relax for a bit. RIP It’s Tough to Be A Bug.

I love a good beverage, and Animal Kingdom absolutely delivers. When I’m in Pandora, my must-order drinks are the Pandoran Sunrise and the Night Blossom from Pongu Pongu. They’re not only gorgeous (some of the prettiest drinks in Disney), but also incredibly refreshing—perfect for the Florida heat. The Pandoran Sunrise is bright and fruity, while the Night Blossom is a little more adventurous with layered flavors that somehow taste even better than they look.

I also love checking out seasonal offerings, especially back at Java Isle. One of my favorite limited-time drinks is the Bunny Burrow Brew, which usually pops up in the spring. It’s fun, festive, and exactly the kind of unique drink that makes Animal Kingdom feel so special.

When it’s time for a meal, Satu’li Canteen is my top pick in the park. It’s quick-service, but it doesn’t feel like typical theme park food. The space is bright and airy, the menu is creative, and everything feels fresh.

My absolute favorite item on the menu is the Cheeseburger Steamed Pods (Bao Buns). These are a must-order for me every single visit. The fluffy bao buns are filled with seasoned beef, melty cheese, and pickles, all topped with a tangy special sauce that somehow tastes exactly like a cheeseburger—but better. Comforting, flavorful, and just unique enough to feel special.

Another favorite activity of mine—usually saved for mid-day or later in the afternoon—is taking the train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. It’s a great way to rest your feet and experience a completely different side of the park.

Once there, I always stop by the petting zoo and then head straight to the Animation Experience at Conservation Station, which I absolutely love. A Disney animator walks you step-by-step through drawing a character, and somehow everyone ends up with something impressive. Most recently, I drew Pua from Moana, and it became one of my favorite souvenirs from the day.

The rest of Conservation Station is extremely cool as well. On my most recent visit, I even got to see the conservation team performing a live surgery—an incredible reminder of the park’s real-world commitment to animal care and conservation.

Animal Kingdom is a park that truly rewards slowing down. Whether you’re riding headliners, sipping specialty drinks, wandering trails, or learning about conservation, it offers a more meaningful and immersive experience than anywhere else at Walt Disney World. If you have the time, let yourself linger—you might just find it becomes your favorite park, too.
